What is the difference between old comedy and new comedy?

The old comedy in Greek comedy was personal or political satire eg Aristophanes. In the 3rd-4th centuries B.C with the rise of Macedonia and decline of Greek power the old comedy was replaced by new comedy with plots and characters. The love intrigues& scheming servants were central to the new comedy. Menander, Philemon, and Diphilus are writers of this genre.

Old comedy relies on stock characters of the Commedia del Arte of Italy such as plays written by Pirandello. There are a lot of slap stick, jokes, and one liners.

New comedy is verging on being sophisticated with more of a plot line as is more subtle.

When you feel like it is an out dated joke it is the old comedy. The new comedy is nothing but where you can't yourself to laugh.
