Inert gases are use for welding is because in the welding process, the heat will actually hasten up the process of oxidation(rusting) happening on metals.
Oxidation process(rusting) requires oxygen, thus, by using inert gas, it will purge the surrounding of oxygen preventing the oxidation process from happening.

Argon is a noble gas and does not typically react with metals. However, argon is commonly used in metal industries as a shielding gas during welding to prevent oxidation of the metal being worked on. Additionally, argon is used in some specialized metal processing techniques, like inert gas arc welding, due to its inert properties.
The gas is going to depend on what style of welding you are doing. For TIG (tungsten inert gas) it is 100% argon. For heliarc, which is a form of TIG, it is 100% helium. For MIG (metal inert gas) it is 75% argon/ 25% carbon dioxide. Finally, for gas welding, it acetylene and oxygen--separate tanks. (my son helped on this one)
