Inert gases are use for welding is because in the welding process, the heat will actually hasten up the process of oxidation(rusting) happening on metals.

Oxidation process(rusting) requires oxygen, thus, by using inert gas, it will purge the surrounding of oxygen preventing the oxidation process from happening.

What does mig stand for in mig welding?

MIG stands for metal inert gas. It is a non-standard term for gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) according to the American Welding Society (AWS). It is simply Metal Inert Gas.

What is the principle of tig welding?

Tungsten Inert Gas (orTIG) welding is also referred to as GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) and by the term Heliarc® which was the Linde Company's trade name for the TIG process when it was originally introduced. The welding arc is started with a sharply pointed tungsten electrode shielded by inert gas. A separate filler rod is fed manually into the weld puddle in much the same way as is done when gas welding. The process is well suited for aluminum.

What argon is with metal?

Argon is an inert gas. this is not the correct answer Nor was it complete. Argon is used in welding to shield the heated metal from oxidation. This is called TIG welding, which stands for Through Inert Gas. Argon does not react directly with the metal.

What is used as a welding gas?

The gas is going to depend on what style of welding you are doing. For TIG (tungsten inert gas) it is 100% argon. For heliarc, which is a form of TIG, it is 100% helium. For MIG (metal inert gas) it is 75% argon/ 25% carbon dioxide. Finally, for gas welding, it acetylene and oxygen--separate tanks. (my son helped on this one)

What is the welding for MIG welding?

mig welding is Metal Inert Gas welding. it typically uses Constant voltage DC+ current. It uses a wire feeder that supplies the electrode to the weld puddle and shields the molten weld puddle with inert gas (argon/co2 blend). Filler wire and shielding gas depend on the metal being welded.
