A friction crane is an older model like an American 9210 who's boom controls are gear/ clutch driven. Engaging the clutch and throwing the gears requires a very stout frame and they typically have much stiffer booms and can tolerate a lot more abuse.... They are good for rough lifting operations like pulling pile or pile driving.

Hydraulic cranes are there modern counterparts who's boom is controlled by hydraulic pistons which have a much lighter, more delicate touch to the controls and are much better in "heavy lift" operations where you need precision movement.

Is a crane a pneumatic or hydrolic system and why?

Older type cranes used pneumatics for the operation of the crane's control systems. The actual movement of the crane's working components are usually operated by hydraulic cylinders or winch systems. The winch systems used to be powered by mechanical friction mechanisms but are typically powered by hydraulic motors today. Typically, pneumatics are never used to power the crane's load bearing functions

What is a friction crane?

Well, darling, a friction crane is a type of crane that uses the friction between the crane's drum and the rope to lift and move heavy loads. It's like a big, strong arm that can hoist stuff up and swing it around with ease. So, next time you see one in action, just remember it's all about that friction doing the heavy lifting.
