Paddle wheels, turned by the flow of water in a stream or river were connected to a main drive shaft, and pulleys of various sizes were used to vary the amount of power needed for individual tasks. The most common use of paddle wheels was probably the manufacture of flour, where wheat was ground between millstones, which were turned by the power of the paddle wheel, but furniture factories and textile mills also took advantage of the free power that was generated by water seeking lower ground.
Steam was also widely used in industry by the early 1900's, and so for the first time, factories didn't necessarily need to be located in flood zones, unless they needed the waterways to transport their products. Also, because of steam's ability to be used anywhere, some of the first cars and trucks were powered by steam as well.
