∙ 12y agoI'm assuming you want to check to see if the motor works.
In other words, if the motor isn't working you want to know if the motor is bad or the capacitor is bad.
Turn on power to the motor, and carefully attempt to start motor rotation in the correct direction by manually rotating the shaft or the load connected to the shaft.
If the motor will maintain its motion once you get it started, the problem is most likely a capacitor. Check the capacitors for bulging and replace any defective parts.
If the motor will not spin at all, or will not maintain any momentum, the motor is likely the problem. You can replace it or try to reduce the rotating friction by lubricating the bearings, etc.
IF YOU'RE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB
SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY
REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.
If you do this work yourself, always turn off the powerat the breaker box/fuse panel BEFORE you attempt to do any work AND always use a meter or voltage indicator to insure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

∙ 14y agoIf it hums, but doesn't turn and the shaft freely turns with no power applied, then you need to replace the starting capacitor. Be sure to check the brushes before doing anything as they may be worn enough to also replace.
capacitor start motor
Drawing block diagram of single phase capasitor start motor?
A run capacitor and a starter capacitor are not the same thing. A run capacitor is energized the entire time the motor is running, and a start capacitor is not. A run capacitor is one that changes the current on the windings of a single phase AC induction motor to create a rotating magnetic field to energize a second-phase winding. A start capacitor increases starting torque, allowing a motor to be turned on rapidly. It stays in the circuit only long enough to bring the motor to 3/4 of full speed. Some motors then continue to run with a run capacitor.
mainly due to undervoltage.
As anything to do with timing values for an electronic system of controlling a motor. Based on the question, the simple answer is that the capacitor causes a 90 degree lead which allows the motor to have a magnetic shift which causes the motor to start rotation.
A run capacitor is used to improve the efficiency and power factor of a single-phase motor by providing a phase shift to the auxiliary winding. Once the motor is running, the capacitor helps maintain a steady motor speed and performance. It remains in the circuit to assist in the motor's operation.
capacitor start motor
Very often a capacitor IS used in a single-phase motor. It provides a phase-shifted current to the starting winding to ensure that the motor runs in the right direction, e.g. clockwise if that is the requirement.

The capacitor is used to create a second phase from the single phase power source and it is the interaction between these two phases that causes the motor to turn.
If the heater blower has humming noise when motor is running, first check its capacitor. If the capacitor is fine, then the motor is the problem and may need to be replaced.
Single phase induction motor ( usually capacitor- start type)
The single phase induction motors are made self starting by providing an additional flux by some additional means. Now depending upon these additional means the single phase induction motors are classified as: 1.Split phase induction motor. 2.Capacitor start inductor motor. 3.Capacitor start capacitor run induction motor. 4. Shaded pole induction motor.
