It is pretty much agreed that the first invention of Thomas Edison was a tin foil phonograph. The idea came to him while working to improve the efficiency of the telegraph. He noticed that if the telegraph sounds were played at a high rate of speed the sounds resembled words.

Why thomas Edison is important?

Thomas Edison was the first "industrial" inventor. He took the art of invention to new heights, and made it into a real industry. He made sure that each invention would have a market, that it really was useful and desired BEFORE he invented it. He was astonishingly persistent, and kept going when others might have given up.
