The Dutch language is a west-Germanic language (low German) and the name is derived from Dutsch. The English word Dutch was originally used to describe speakers of Low (spoken in the Netherlands, Flanders) and High German (spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland), but later came to refer to the language spoken in the Low Countries after their unification in 1579.
