When did Google become popular?

Google became popular in the US and Canada during 2000-2004. The popularity for general internet search engines grew slowly until it rapidly began to grow at least in part due to AdWords, which allowed people to pay per click on ads for a search.

Google was to enter into a " bidding war" with Yahoo! Search Marketing over who would provide advertisements on their pages, generating successful results. It's unclear when Google surpassed Yahoo!. Estimates range from 2001-2006. There are also many factors that may have contributed to its increase in popularity such as the fact that Google is easy and accessible on any computer unlike other competitors like Lycos or Excite at the time. They offered slower browsing speeds because they required plug ins and did not.

Google's popularity can be traced back to its initial beta release on September 4, 1997.
