The US Civil War was a costly war that extracted a impact on both sides. Compared to the North, however, the South was in terrible shape. There was a lack of manpower to utilize what farmlands remained, and for all practical purposes its economy lay in shambles. The Southern economy would not return to its days of 1860 until the 20th century.
