Typical signs are depression, ennui, or the frustration that the things which use to work for the individual no longer do. Often the person does things which are uncharacteristic of themselves, in an attempt to break the negative psychological grip that their mind has them in. The psychologist Carl Jung called this time of life "the darkness of midlife".

Emotional fatigue, loss of vitality, and waning interest in the usual things are often signs of a midlife crisis. A change in the person's perspective of their life is the key sign. Life decisions made in the past are questioned, and prior achievements are considered inadequate.
