Poverty means people are too poor to afford food, clean water, shelter, etc. Because those areas are poor, it means that any businesses that allow people to acquire food or necessary goods and services make little or no money. In turn, those businesses can't invest in the community (by providing jobs or buying materials), which creates a vicious cycle.

The poor suffer higher crime rates, which helps keep them trapped in poverty. They also tend to lack access to good health care, which additionally promotes poverty. The poor lack good educational opportunities, again trapping their children in a cycle of poverty. These are some of the primary concerns.

The greatest issue I have witnessed so far is the medical aspect. With the new laws regarding health care, there are many that cannot afford any coverage let alone the penalties levied by the federal government for not having any to begin with. In order to succeed in life, one must have a financial means to achieve it and most impoverished people do not have this means.

Without some sort of balance between what an individual needs in order to become productive in our society and the financial means to pay for it, they are forever doomed to remain outside the norm everyone else enjoys. The stereotyping of the poor as being unwilling to work or educate themselves forever creates a wall between them and living a life the rest of us should feel lucky we were able to achieve.

Without programs designed to help the ones who truly are looking for a way to provide for themselves, they will be looked upon by most as outcasts and a burden on the taxpayers. The sad truth is that they will become tomorrows statistics in our death rates that could have been prevented and ever increasing population in our prison systems. Sad, but true.
