Understand luck is a big factor in life. A person may be born highly intelligent or extremely attractive. A person may be born into a wealthy family. A person may have great parents. All these things are good luck and greatly reduce the chance of poverty. The opposites are bad luck and greatly increase the chance of being poor. Also what country you are born in is a factor. An adult may be poor just because of bad luck or rich due to good luck. Most people think rich people are geniuses and poor people are dumb but that is not true at all. Most people think if you work hard you will not be poor which also is not true. Here is an example of faulty thinking. Somebody writes a book and says they interviewed 1,000 rich people and found out the common trait is they work hard and take risks to make money. The writer concludes that is the best way to become wealthy. The trouble is they might have got the same result if they interviewed 1,000 poor people. They might have found most of those people worked real hard in a business they started that went bankrupt. See, the writer was interviewing the lucky ones. So, I don't agree at all that if people are poor it's their fault. We have to believe people don't want to be poor and wouldn't be if they could do anything about it.

∙ 12y agoNo, on the whole you cannot blame poor people for their own poverty. Most poor people are born in poverty and even though they work hard, never manage to get themselves out of their poverty, as it is extremely difficult for a poor person to escape his/her poverty-stricken life, since every day is just a question of survival for a person in extreme poverty.

Poverty is a huge problem all over the world. Over 3 billion people live on $2.50 a day. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. Poverty is the state for the majority of the world's people and nations. They have been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight. Such causes of poverty and inequality are no doubt real. But deeper and more global causes of poverty are often less discussed."Being lazy, making poor decisions and being solely responsible for their own plight" is not the cause of poverty. Yes, this unfortunately is sometimes true but the reality of the situation is the world we live in is that people are not born equal meaning that there are many privileges that are taken for granted without even realizing it. These are privileges such as the color of your skin (white privilege), gender privilege (being male), religious privilege (depends on where you are in the world), Nationalistic privilege, socioeconomic privilege and the list goes on and on. Keep in mind (considering this is in the economics section) that there is an unequal distribution of wealth in the world that is consolidated in the hands of few (2% of the world's population controlling over half of the world's resources). Single women and children are often times the most vulnerable populations in the realm of poverty.

There is only one reason for poverty. Greed. Acquiring more than we need. It is a very grave sin. Yes, Jesus said the poor will always be with us, he said this because he understood that greed will always be with us.
