Underneath the Earth's crust is molten rock. The continents are basically floating on top of the rock and therefore move and shift. This is what causes volcanoes and earthquakes. Pangaea was broken up because the tectonic plates are continually moving.

Pangaea broke up due to the movement of tectonic plates. The process, known as plate tectonics, is driven by the flow of mantle beneath Earth's crust. This movement caused Pangaea to slowly break apart and shift into the continents we see today.
