North Carolina has produced the largest emeralds ever found in North America. There are a number of mines, and at least two are open to the public. These are:
Crabtree Emerald Mine, near Little Switzerland, and
Emerald Hollow Mine, near Hiddenite.
A quick internet search will reveal websites for both of the above, and info on all of the other NC emerald localities.
Happy hunting!

Columbia, which is in South America, is the place where most emeralds are found today. Historically, emeralds have also been found in Africa, India, and Italy.
Emeralds are found in only a few places in the world, with Columbia and Brazil as the top producers.

Yes, it is possible for someone to find emeralds in their backyard if there were deposits of emeralds in the area. However, it is rare and would require the right geological conditions for emeralds to form and be present in that location.
Quartz is more common than emeralds. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, found in a variety of locations across the globe. Emeralds, on the other hand, are much rarer and tend to be found in select regions with specific geological conditions conducive to their formation.
