North Carolina has produced the largest emeralds ever found in North America. There are a number of mines, and at least two are open to the public. These are:
Crabtree Emerald Mine, near Little Switzerland, and
Emerald Hollow Mine, near Hiddenite.
A quick internet search will reveal websites for both of the above, and info on all of the other NC emerald localities.

In 1998, In 1998 Jamie Hill, a serious collector found an 858-carat emerald in his backyard in Hiddenite. Turns out that those emeralds were some of the finest gem quality emeralds in north america.
