I can't speak for the entire cast but my family adopted chance the american bulldog aka Blitz when he retired from his movie career at age 10. He gave us 5 loving years and we miss him terribly. His real name was blue Walters blitz and he also starred in many other films such as cheaper by the dozen. You will read of another dog called rattler who played chance as well. Blitz was rattlers sub in. Blitz was supposed to be a sub dog in cheaper by the dozen but ended up taking the entire role. Many movie dogs go up for adoption once their careers have ended but most are seniors. We adopted blitz at 10 and American bulldogs are only expected to live to an average of 11. He almost made 15!

Siamese if I am not mistaken. the original title of the film was (The incredible Journey) and there was an implied racial tolerance- brotherhood line, here developed with cats and dogs, nominally mortal foes in real life. sort of an inverse of call of the wild, return to the tame.
The movie you are referring to is called "The Adventures of Milo and Otis". It is a Japanese film that follows the journey of a cat named Milo and a dog named Otis as they experience various adventures together.
'Returning Home' but the English equivalent is 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey'. (1993)
