Charon was the ferryman of hades.
For the price of a coin he would ferry the newly dead to hades along the river styx.
If the newly dead couldn't pay they would have to walk along the bank. Which would take over 100years.
In Greek Mythology people would be buried with a coin in their mouth so if they went to Hades they could pay Charon and be feried across

Charon's craft refers to the boat or ferry that Charon, the ferryman of the underworld in Greek mythology, uses to transport the souls of the deceased across the river Styx into the afterlife. It is said that Charon required payment in the form of a coin placed on the eyes or in the mouth of the deceased to ferry them across.

Charon, The Ferryman.
Charon was the ferryman of Hades.
Go into Hades' temple. Fall down the hole . Talk to Charon, the boat driver. Beat the mini game, and yoy're at Cerberus.
For more or less the same reason Hades himself was: it was his job. If there's a river that you can't ford or swim across, there has to be a ferryman. Charon was that ferryman.
