The car is normally in overdrive. When you press the button the left side of the gear shift then there should be a light on your dashboard should come on saying o/d OFF.
The button does not switch from Overdrive to Automatic. The button just turns the overdrive off. Overdrive is not a separate drive system as your question implies. Normally you leave the car in overdrive mode. That way the transmission shifts into overdrive at highway speeds, thus saving fuel. If you are saying the transmission is stuck in overdrive and it will not disengage then seek out a A/T professional.

== == This is a problem. If you don't know ebonics you won't know what she is saying about you.
Huston, we have a problem!
How can who slove their problem?Ask the question again, this time saying who or what the question is about.
Well, I would start by asking...you mean the gearbox in the transmission....manual or automatic (and which specific transmission is in which 500 sl (it was made several entirely different years)....or maybe your thinking about the gearbox of the transaxle, with the same question about which one you actually may have? But I would end by saying, if you have to ask a question like that on a forum like this, it is not something you should attempt in any case!

This is one way of saying that a solution for a problem is being sought. but has not yet found
I believe, but don't quote me on this, that the hold button is just for holding the overdrive off for around town driving. You can still shift manually by going thru first, second, drive then pushing the hold button which would allow the overdrive gear to come on. In saying that i don't think overdrive works under 60kmh/35mph.
