Hi, if you have a 73 bug with you. And if it jumps on the first gear. It is nothing to worry. Reasons behind this can be
1.) You must be putting more accelerator on your buggy.
2.) Don't visit any mechanic until, check out your buggy's engine and if you know more about repairing engines. Tight up the clutch and the brake.
So this two can be the reasons. If any other cause, try to go to a mechanic.

As long as the 73 isn't a super beetle then yes they should fit.
Your timing is off.
Group Size 47.
The drive gear is in the tail shaft of the transmission. The driven gear is on the end of the speedometer cable housing.
I believe its 5 degrees + or - from TDC...I'm dealing with mine now!
