What transmission will bolt to a 1978 301 Pontiac motor?
Any automatic trans from Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac or Cadillac will bolt right up. A Chevy transmission will NOT bolt up without and adapter. If you change from a TH350 to a TH400 you will have to change your drive shaft yoke and the cross member. Unless you just have one lying around, or find and extremely good deal on one, there is just about no reason to put a TH400 behind a 301.

The bolt pattern on Chevy engines is unique. There are TH350 transmissions with both the Chevy bolt pattern and the BOP (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) pattern, but they are becoming somewhat rare.

It will "bolt up", but there is an issue with the torque converter. You will need to either have a standard torque converter machined/welded, or you will need to find the special torque converter that came on a 151/TH350 setup from the factory. I do not know if one actually exists, but I am looking.

Some Pontiacs came from the factory with Chevy engines. If this is the case on your 79 firebird, then the transmission will bolt up to a 350 Chevy. If the car came with a Pontiac engine, then the bolt pattern is different and would not bolt up.

you can get a pointer at many parts suppliers such as jegs or summit. it will be chrome but will still do the job. bolt on to the engine and then set timing.Just a note. A TH350 is a transmission. You can not time a transmission.
