It's probably a linkage problem INSIDE the door. Linkage may have come off when a retainer broke or possibly when someone used a "slim jim" to open the door. They are notorious for damaging internal door linkage. But door linkage retainers can fail even if you've never used a slim jim. The repair isn't typically TOO difficult, the worst part is getting the door trim off the inside.
