A slim Jim can sometimes be used to unlock jammed power locks, particularly in older vehicles with simpler locking mechanisms. However, modern cars often have more complex electronic systems that a slim Jim cannot manipulate effectively. Additionally, using a slim Jim improperly can damage the vehicle's wiring or locking system. It's generally safer and more effective to use professional tools or call a locksmith for assistance.
When you get locked out of a car with power locks, you can call a locksmith or use a slim Jim tool to open the locks. You can also try pushing something through a slightly open window in order to reach the lock button.
Ask the police department. They use them a lot.
If your vehicle has power door locks I advise against it. Forcing the mechanism with a slim Jim has a 99% probability of screwing up the power door lock system.

To open a 2008 Escape rear door gate that won't open, first check if the vehicle battery is functioning, as a dead battery can prevent power-operated locks from working. If the lock is jammed, try using the key or the key fob to unlock it multiple times. If it remains stuck, you may need to access the latch mechanism by removing the interior panel or using a slim jim or similar tool to manually release the latch. If these methods fail, it's advisable to consult a mechanic or a locksmith for assistance.
Wrong kinda locks. Locks need to be upright.
To open a locked door with a slim Jim, first insert the slim Jim between the door frame and the lock mechanism. Gently maneuver it downwards to catch the locking rods or levers inside the door. Once you feel resistance, wiggle the slim Jim to push or pull the locking mechanism until it disengages. This method is typically used for older car doors and may not be effective on modern locks.
To open a jammed boot on a VW Bora when the doors are accessible, try accessing the boot release mechanism through the rear seats if they fold down. If that’s not an option, use a slim tool, like a coat hanger, to manipulate the latch or the lock mechanism through any gaps near the boot. If these methods fail, consider consulting a professional locksmith or mechanic for assistance.

It's probably a linkage problem INSIDE the door. Linkage may have come off when a retainer broke or possibly when someone used a "slim jim" to open the door. They are notorious for damaging internal door linkage. But door linkage retainers can fail even if you've never used a slim jim. The repair isn't typically TOO difficult, the worst part is getting the door trim off the inside.
