Most truck under one ton uses 5 quarts of oil for the engine. One item that changes the fill amount is the length of the oil filter. You can't go wrong if you drain and fill the engine by looking at the dipstick. Put four quarts in then start the engine, check the oil level, add a quart in if you need it. Don't panic if it 1/2 a quart over the full line it won't hurt the engine.
I would drain off a qt if it was me. You don't want the rotating assembly making contact with the level of oil because it will whip the oil into a froth reducing the oil's ability to lubricate properly.
it wont hurt, the excess oil will eventually burn off
My question to you is why would you add 5 quarts of oil to an engine that the manufactures recommends you only add 4.5 quarts with oil/filter change. That is a waste of 1/2 quart of oil and is very unwise. But, to answer your question, it may do no harm and then again it may very well be harmful. Anytime you overfill any engine you risk internal engine damage as the excess oil can make contact with the crankshaft and cause cavitation which will result in air being mixed with the oil. This air/oil mix is a poor lubricant and the result will be engine wear. My advice is to remove the excess oil immediately. Just drain out 1/2 quart or drain it all out into a clean container and then pour it all back in minus that 1/2 quart. That way you know you are 100% safe.
It's not ideal, but whether it will actually hurt or not depends on the specific design of the engine. Some engine designs can tolerate excess oil better than others. The most likely problem is that the level of the oil will get too close to the moving parts in the engine, which can result in air being "whipped" into the oil. This is a bad thing for several reasons, not least because the air can get sucked into the pump resulting in "dry" spots in the oil lines. On many cars, the optimum oil level is marked on the dipstick as a range rather than a specific line. A quart over the bottom of the fill zone is almost certainly not a problem. A quart over the top is more worrisome.
Park the vehicle on a level surface. Drain the oil and change the filter. Add 4 quarts of the correct weight oil. Start the engine, let it run for 1 minute and shut down. Wait 30 minutes and check the oil level on the dipstick. Add as necessary to reach the full mark. You now know the capacity.
It will not hurt the engine what so ever, But it will make it smoke and might fowl out a spark plug.
No it will not, That is how many Qts. it holds anyway. when you change the oil and filter.
6 quarts per the owners manual. Will not hurt to put just a little more than 6 quarts in but as with any engine do not overfill.
I have had antifreeze get into the engine oil when the engine blew a head gasket. A little bit of water or Antifreeze will not hurt anything. If it was 2 quarts then it would be A good idea to change the oil but 3 ounces is nothing to be conserensd about.
It's possible to cause foaming in the oil pan, but one quart extra probably wouldn't hurt anything.
It won't hurt the engine but it will hurt the catalytic converter.
