Moisture worked it's way in. Clean it up good and replace the gasket when you put the cover back on.

You are most likely running a petroleum based Gear Lube & the lighter chemicals are evaporating due to high temperature operation. After you completely clean everything, replace it with the correct viscosity of AMSOIL Severe Gear 100% Synthetic Gear Lube.
