As far as I am aware it is because in old stage coach days the lump that went over the drivers seat was called the `looting' and was where the more valuable cargo was stored which was called the `loot' I can only guess the way the word looting is said has become lootin', luton. it certainly tallies with the shape of the modern van.

I would love to hear confirmation of this as no one else has heard this.
