You have a fuel leak, or the gas attendant spilt some while refilling. To check, turn the key open/engine off position 1. With the engine off the pump will run for a few seconds/pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks/fuel smell under the hood, and for drips on the ground under the car. If the leak is small you might have to cycle the key so that the pump runs again. Depending on the year/age of the car, the fuel line might be leaking, fuel pump gasket tank vent hose or even fault evap equipment.
