I can't answer for ALL women, but I can for my wife: She's short, 5'2", and in smaller/lower cars has trouble seeing down the road, especially if ANY vehicles are ahead of her. In taller cars she has a better long range view down the road, has better visibility, and is therefore less likely to be surprised by something ahead.

Note in her case it's a matter of vehicle HEIGHT, not overall size. She used to drive a 1995 Lincoln Town Car, one of the largest cars on the road, but it's relatively short. She really missed the upright seating she had had in her old Mini-Van, and when it was time to get her something newer than the town car she opted to go the SUV route...so she got a used 2002 Ford Explorer, which works VERY nicely for it's height and view, as well as having plenty of room to carry passengers in the rear (middle) seat, plus our two 65 lb dogs back in the cargo area.

Back in 1983, with three growing children, she had been leaning toward a traditional station wagon. As I always drove vans at my work, I was in favor of one of the newly announced Mini-Vans produced by Chrysler. As it happens there was a dealer that was joint Ford & Chrysler (actually Plymouth I think), and had a big Ford Station Wagon (but low) right next to a new Mini-Van (smaller outside length and width, but higher.

She fell in love with the higher seating of the mini-van, and has liked tall vehicles ever since.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
