Cars run on the internal combustion of gasoline. Gasoline is a green house gas made from decomposed plant and animal matter that is millions of years old (this matter is found under the ground). Those organisms contained carbon dioxide which is now contained in that gasoline. When the gasoline is burned, the carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is infamous for capturing sunlight and holding it close to Earth's surface. This contributes to out-of-whack climate cycles along with the melting of glaciers (and rising sea levels).
