Till your battery runs dead.
I would suspect torque converter trouble.
It is possibly the Overdrive Selinoid locatied within the transmission. It's malfunction prevents the transmission from downshifting, thus at low speeds the engin lugs and dies. This is with an automatic transmission.
If you drive your car without oil and it dies, your engine has seized. Time to replace the engine or the vehicle.

You can drive any car with the battery light on until the battery eventually runs down and the engine dies. The light is on because there is a problem with the charging system and more than likely it means the alternator needs replacing.
