If it's a registered farm vehicle which wouldn't be considered a Commercial Motor Vehicle without the farm exemption, any licenced driver can operate it.

In the case of vehicles which would normally require a CDL, the farmer, immediate family members of the farmer may operate it within a 150 mile radius of that farm, only for purposes directly supporting that farm, without requiring a CDL. However, anyone operating it more than 150 miles from the farm, and anyone who isn't either immediate family members of the farmer or direct employees (W-2 employees, not 1099 employees) must have a CDL.

What vehicles qualify for farm use?

usually a truck or spot utillity vehicle used in the production of livestock or crops. vehicle can not be driven to work, but can be used for shopping dr. visits etc. these are Texas rules as i understand them.Farm useAny vehicle really, but lets be realistic a sedan type car has no use as a farm vehicle and you would have a hard time justifying it. A farm use vehicle is exempt from gasoline tax as it is an off road vehicle and state taxes for road improvement or use taxes do not apply, they are meant never to leave farm property or be driven on roads except when the distance between fields makes road travel necessary. You need to think of it as a tractor and limit its use to the same criteria IE: you would not drive a tractor to the grocery store.

Does a person have to have a cdl to drive a farm truck?

If it's a registered farm vehicle, and operated by the farmer, family members of the farmer, or direct employees of the farmer, then no. However, the distance from the farm the vehicle is permitted to operate is restricted, all activities of that truck must be for the operation of that farm, and it may not haul freight for hire.

Can you drive a semi tractor without a CDL?

Only in very limited circumstances. If it's a for-hire vehicle, then no. If it's a registered farm vehicle, and you are either the farmer, immediate family of the farmer, or a direct employee of the farmer, and that vehicle is used on a not-for-hire basis solely in support of that farm's activities, and it is within a 150 mile radius of the farm, then you don't need a CDL to drive it, although states will have their own licencing requirements for vehicles of this class which are exempt from regulation by the FMCSA.
