It would be attached to the transmission, not the rears. The cables you see going into the diffs are differential temperature sensors. It would be pointless to use the rears to determine road speed, as you might have, say, tires at 25/32nds on the #3 axle, whereas your tires on the #2 axle might only be at, say, 12/32nds.
