On your 1988 Celebrity code 12 means the computer is working properly. You should always get a code 12 whenever you check for codes. Code 43 has to do with the Electronic Spark Control, specifically the knock sensor. It doesn't necessarily mean the knock sensor has failed, it could be in the wiring To check the knock sensor measure it resistance. It should read between 3300 and 4500 ohms. If it does not it may mean the knock sensor has failed. One of our cars recently posted a code 43. When we checked it out it turned out the terminal had come off of the knock sensor. When it was put back on it cleared up the problem.

So here are both. 1982 - 1992 Code 43: Electronic Spark Control "Poor electrical connection, open or short in circuit; defective ESC module; defective knock sensor; defective ECM". 2003 - 2005 OBD I Code 43: Knock Sensor(KS)Circuit "Check ECM/PCM for an open or short to ground; if necessary, reroute the harness away from other wires such as spark plugs, etc. Replace the knock sensor if bad". Basically different! But the same!! Right? ESC & KS talk to each other.

I have a 92 s10 blazer and my code 43 was fixed by replacing the knock sensor. so maybe check the knock sensor and the wiring from that to the ECM.

I can't make any promises, but I've got 94 Chevy using OBD1, like yours probably has too. In my manual this is what it says: Code 42:Ignition Control Module - "Check the wiring and connectors between the ignition module and the ECM. Check the ignition module. Replace the ECM".Code 43:Electronic Spark Control - "ESC module is not receiving a knock signal from the knock sensor. Check the knock system sensor, or the ESC module. Would code 43 electronic spark control failure cause the vehicle to not start and would replacing the knock sensor fix this or is it an ECM issue?
I have a 1990 Pontiac Safari wagon that would not start,after much testing we found one bad fuel injector replaced it and car started but ran terrible, did more testing and found bad ignition module, replaced module runs better but now have code #43 knock sensor and engine is running in default mode switched ECM no help must be knock sensor don't think knock sensor would keep car from starting but the other things mentioned here would. Hope this helps. This wagon has 3.1 engine. Havent changed knock sensor yet.
