You can find the module for your 2000 Ford Explorer on the firewall in the engine compartment. The module will be on the drivers side of the firewall.
The gem module on an 03 Ford Explorer is under the dash. It is just to the left of the radio.
Generic Electronic Module
I believe the GEM is in the center stack of the dash and that the radio has to be removed to gain access
The GEM is $1200.00 plus labor. Better ideas by Ford
I believe it is in the center stack of the dash , and that the radio is removed to gain access to the GEM
As far as I know the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) controls the 4x4 on the 1995 Ford Explorer and I believe that is in the center stack of the dash behind and to the left of the radio
I'm not sure if your Ranger is the same , but on my 1995 Explorer with a similar dash the GEM is in the center stack of the dash , to the left of the radio On a 1997 Ford Ranget 4x4 the Gem module is located as stated above. Behind the radio and to the left.
"Generic Electronics Module" It is used on 1995 and later models according to my Haynes manual.
As far as I know, there wasn't a separate module for the 4 wheel drive from 1995 to 2000, the 4x4 system was controlled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module) This module incorporates the functions of several different modules into one and offers diagnostic codes to locate failures ( see a dealer's service department for diagnosis ) The GEM is located in the centre stack of the dash, remove radio to gain access.
As far as I know , the 1995 Ford Explorer doesn't have a SEPARATE module for the 4 WD . That is also handled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) and I believe that is in the center stack of the dash and that you have to remove the radio to actually change it
The Gem Module is a relay that control the majority of the electrical functions in late model ford vehicles
