A bucket list seems like a very straight forward idea. Simply create a list of everything that one hopes to accomplish or experience before they die. However, this sort of list can provide a lot of insight about what is important to a person and how they hope to live their life. For example, a deeply spiritual person may focus their list on experiences that include visiting famous places of worship or meeting their spiritual leader, like the Pope or the Dali Lama. Their list may also include more charity oriented tasks like contributing a certain amount of money to their favorite organization or taking a trip to a third-world country to help install wells. An adventurous person's list will probably focus on adrenaline inducing activities like whitewater rafting or bungee jumping. Neither type of list is better or worse than the other. But when creating your own list, it is a great time to take stock of what is the most meaningful to you. A bucket list is usually viewed as something that will happen in the distant future. However, it can be a great tool for focusing one's current activities. For instance, a person who has things on their list like scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef or run the New York City Marathon, should not be spending their time sitting on the sofa watching TV and eating potato chips. They can use their bucket list to develop short term goals like sign up for a scuba class or enter into the local 5k race. By creating goals today, based on what they want to accomplish in the future, they can change the direction of their life to make it more like their ideal. Although some people use this list for high and lofty goals, it can also be fun to include a handful of items on the list that are silly or just plain wacky. For instance, people who love to take road trips could research some of the weirder American 'landmarks' like Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska or Lucy the Elephant in Margate, New Jersey. It is also a great idea to include goals that will stretch a person's comfort zone or help them overcome a fear. A bucket list is personal and should be as unique as the person creating it, so should include only the things they want to do, not what other people think they should do.
