The owner retains their ownership of the vehicle, however, if it is not driveable, it is towed from the scene and impoounded by the police or placed in the towing contractors custody. Either way, there is usually a fee connected to this service which is payable either by you or your insurance company. If the vehicle was involved in a vehicular death, it may be held by law enforcement as evidence until such time as their investigation of the accident is concluded.
