with your spark plugs out and your distributor cap off, (by the crank pulley bolt)roll the engine over to top dead center (TDC) or 0 degrees. put a long screw driver in the #1 spark plug hole to see if it is on TDC, by rolling it over and watching it rise to its highest point. or u can watch the crank pulley and there should be some marks on the pulley that line up to a mark on the block. when the mark on the pulley, lines up with the mark on the block, u will be at TDC #1 or #6. when #1 is at TDC, take a look at the position of the rotor on your distributor. #1 terminal on distributer cap should be lined up or close to the direction the rotor is pointed. the distributor rotates clockwise, so follow the terminals clockwise from #1 in conjunction with your firing order. 18436572 Chevy 350
Is it a brand new distributor ? If not then replace the module and pick-up coil in the distributor that you have.
The distributor with distributor cap is at the back of the engine ( just follow the spark plug wires )

Turn engine over and observe is distributor is rotating
It is screewed into the top of the engine block right behind the distributor.
yes wires and cap are a good place to start, also check wires on the coil Check the spark plug wires and distributor cap.
