Ignition switch lock cylinder
I believe you turn the ignition switch to the "On" position (just before the start position). Depress the gas pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds. Then turn the ignition switch off. Then start the car to verify the warning light goes off.
On a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am: turn the key to the on position for 30 minutes or until the security light goes out. The car should start.

Most cars have it on the starter motor or on the fire wall near the battery. It controls the current to the starter and works only when you turn the key to the start position.
Because when you turn the igniton switch to run it heats up the coil which then in turn goes to the distributer and from the distributer to the spark plugs.

If its the same as my 2001 malibu, you turn the key to the on position leave it on for about 10 mins. When the security light goes off turn the key to off. You should then be able to start the engine normally. Its the worst system ever devised.

Leave the key in that position until the light goes off or stops flashing(I cant remember which) it will take a few minutes. after this occurs turn the key off. this will reset the theft system which has most likely been activated. the vehicle should start at this point.
