The origin goes back to 1941 with the first practical prototypes of the modern airbag being developed in 1967. Getting manufacturers to put them in cars though was a different issue. They were first offered as an option in 1974 by GM. It was not until the 1990s that airbags began to be mandatory.

In the 1950's an airbag system was developed, but in 1954 some government cars came with airbags. In 1988 Chrystler offered the first cars with airbags as standard equipment, but it wasn't until 1994 they were used widely. but they have always had mother in-laws
Chevrolet. In 1973 Chevy put it in cars for the government. The '73 Olds Toronado was the first passenger car with airbags sold to the public. But, actually the 1951 Tucker was the first car to EVER have airbags. And, it was sold to the public. The Tucker also was the first car to have seatbelts and headlights that turned with the front wheels, among many other safety features that are now considered "modern" improvements.

Side impact airbags are there to reduce injuries to the head, neck and torso. Like front airbags they deploy instantly on impact. Side airbags deploy from the roof, door panels and seats. Furthermore, like front airbags the side airbags have reduced limb and torso injuries significantly and because of there safety record most new cars are now equipped with side airbags as standard equipment.
