Assuming you're talking about reversing in a vehicle... A helper acts as a 'look-out' in case the driver cannot see clearly due to obstructions. For example - say you're parked 'nose-first' in a narrow road - with high walls on either side... You could simply reverse - but you wouldn't see any obstructions to either side until you could see out of your side windows ! By which time - most of the vehicle would be in the road behind you.
