The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air had rudamentary cup holders in the open glove box. These were great when the car was still but really didn't have much of a recess and would not hold a cup while the car was in motion. By the 1970's one could purchase cup holders that hung from the side windows on cars and snack trays that hung from the dashboard, but the first "cup holders" as they are known today came on the 1983 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager mini-vans.
