Most trimmers come with a small bottle of oil to lubricate it with. Ohterwise just use a household lubricant like wd-40.
A hedge trimmer with a 2 stroke engine will be gas powered. This type of hedge trimmer requires the user to mix oil in the fuel before using it.
An electric trimmer will be cheaper to operate over the course of a year.

You should oil your trimmer every other time it is used to keep it running smoothly.

Viscosity is different. Please use what is required in the owners manual. It can be expensive to repair when subbing wrong products. ~
In the gas no oil is requried but in the crankcase I am guessing a good 30 weigt non-detergent oil would do the trick.
I use 30w engine oil with my trimmer. Once I start it and let it run a miniute (You can do this with an electric as well) I use an old oil can to apply about 1-2 drops of oil where the guide bar screws are located. I reapply about every 2-3 hours dependant upon how heavy I am using the machine. With an electric I would think you shouldn't be using it as much, but I may be wrong.
The most obvious disadvantage that this type of trimmer has is the fact that it can run out of gas. Also mixing it with oil can be a hassle at times. The advantages is that you don't have to rely on a cord and this gives you more freedom to cut.
