I live in CA and we have very rigorous smog laws. You will need to have the car smoged to get it registered. The registration will cost you a few dollars ( it just went up). Mine doubled from 175.00 to 350.00 for my 05 Prius. So, depending on what your car is and the year it can run to several hundred for your tags. I think the state gives you 3 months to get this done ( could be wrong on that so check). Your insurance will also go up. I understand we have one of the highest rates in the country. It also depends on where you live here on the cost of the insurance. Some of our cities have the highest car theft rates in the country. I know we were beating NJ for a while in the number of cars stolen.

You can not register a vehicle in NJ on a permit so therefore you can not get insurance on a car in NJ on a permit. However, If your insuring a vehicle that is co-owned by your parents then they can insure it for you but you cant go anywhere without them or a responsible adult.
