Halogen sniffer or luminescent dye with a UV light. If you've already evacuated the system, and have a means to do this and evacuate it afterwards, I'll often take compressed nitrogen, put a 250 psi positive charge on each side, and see what turns up. This is done after I know for sure there's a leak.
Double check with your local auto store, but it should be R134-A. I just did my charged my 98 Contour, and used R134-A.
Should be R134 if it is 1993 or newer if older should be converted to R134
Should be R134
R134
R134 and R134a refer to the same refrigerant, with R134a being the correct designation. R134a is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, known for its effectiveness and lower ozone depletion potential compared to older refrigerants. While "R134" is often used informally, R134a is the standardized name recognized by industry standards.
They should never be mixed.
R134
R134a should be charged into the system as a vapor. Charging as a liquid can lead to issues such as poor system performance and potential damage to the compressor. It's important to follow manufacturer recommendations when charging the system.
