Cars made youth in the 1920's more independent and allowed them to escape the careful watch of their parents. Instead of socializing at home with the family, many youths could now use cars to seek new forms of entertainment with their friends and to find privacy.
The automobile created the suburbs. People could commute into the cities to work without having to live there.

Before the automobile, people both lived in the city and worked in the city, or lived in the country and worked on a farm. Because of the automobile, the growth of suburbs has allowed people to live on the outskirts of the city and be able to work in the city by commuting. New jobs due to the impact of the automobile such as fast food, city/highway construction, state patrol/police, convenience stores, gas stations, auto repair shops, auto shops, etc. allow more employment for the world's growing population.

It allowed people to move from one place to another allot quicker. The automobile put people on wheels and that changed everything. No longer was a 20 mile trip and all day affair. It also allowed the delivery of goods from one place to another. It opened up parts of the country that could only be reached by horse in the past. The automobile brought people closer together.
For the same reason they worked, played music, socialized, lived etc. No one then knew the cause of the disease, nor its cure. So they continued daily living, despite the sudden extreme increase of the disease... And death rate.
