The first thing to ask if to see their license. After you have checked with the city to see if it is legitimate also check to see if they have any legal actions against them. That does not necessarily will disqualify them but be wary if there are execssive cases and many derogatory comments against them. Ask for names of former customers and on your own time call them to make sure the work was satisfactory, Ask for their insurance coverage and check to make sure it has not lapsed. Above all check with the police department to make sure they are not wanted for any crime. You can do this by accessing public records.
