Main function of solenoid in car is to convert the electrical energy to mechanical energy mainly reciprocating motion of a rod or plunger. It acts as a switch and a valve in automobile. It's a one kind of elctromechnical actuator.

1. In the car starter motor it acts a switch and it also engages and disengages the pinion with fly wheel.

2. In the car automatic transmission solenoid acts as a controlling device of hydraulic fluid which creates pressure on gears and band brakes.

3. Solenoid principle is used for operation of gasoline fuel injectors.
