A station wagon is a body style of automobile that allows for additional storage above and beyond a conventional trunk. Also called an estate wagon or car, this body style usually has a folding set of seats immediately behind the front seat that allow greater use of the space in the rear of the car. The roof top of the car extends back, typically even with the rear bumper of the car, and a fifth door that opens to gain access to this space is at the back. Some station wagons provide for a third row of seating, some facing forward while others face rearward. The general idea was to give persons wanting the additional space a van or truck provides in a platform that was around the size of a typical automobile.
