Anti-Friction. Plain bearings have surfaces that rub together, like sleeve bearings. In roller bearings and ball bearings, the surfaces roll and do not (that is, should not) slide. If they slide they destroy themselves quickly.

How is friction reduced in a rolling bearing as compared to a plain bearing?

In case of rolling contact bearings there is either point contact or line contact between rolling elements and races of the bearing depending on whether it is ball bearing or roller bearing... In case of plain or journal bearings contact is generally area contact. Hence friction is reduced in rolling bearing as compared to a plain bearings.

Who invented the roller ball bearing?

It is not known who specifically invented the roller ball bearing. There are examples of their use by the ancient Egyptians. However, it is thought that they may have been invented before the wheel.

Can you replace the ball bearing wheel bearings in a 1964 VW Beetle with roller bearings?

No, the unit was set up for ball bearings. Rollers will not work. Yes you can and I just did! The races in the hub must be replaced with ones that came with new roller bearing. Inner bearing races must be removed from spindle and not used. Got the roller bearings from PartsPlace for VW in Auburn Hills, Michigan

Roller bearing bicycle?

That'd be rare. Ball bearings are far more common although I believe some pedals come with roller bearings.

Which bearing can withstand both thrust and radial?

The “load” is the force applied to a bearing. The “radial load” is the force applied perpendicular to the shaft. The “axial load” is the force applied in the same direction as the shaft. Deep groove ball bearings sustain both radial load and axial load coming from both directions at the same time.
