When my check engine light comes on, it is caused by the temperature sensor not working. As soon as the light comes on, my temperature drops to cool. If the light goes out, the temp gauge returns to normal.
It is possible there is a baad oil leak on the exhaust. Have it checked out. Good luckJoe

Your check gauge light comes on if : your coolant temperature guage shows the temperature is high your oil pressure gauge shows the oil pressure is low or your fuel gauge shows the fuel tank is near empty
Check the O2 sensor located on the exhaust pipe on the passenger side. Could be giving the computer wrong information.
Check the brake light switch. It is defective or out of adjustment.

There are sensers on your exhaust pipe that sense how much exhaust is being let out and how much unburned fuel is coming out. There is a computer in your car that senses that and try's to fix it. one of your sensers might be bad or you might have a clogged catalatic converter.
When the check engine light comes on, it's a good indication that something is wrong with your engine.
When I press my highlight the low light comes on but does not stay on and I have to hold the switch to keep it on.
