The basic function of a car jack is to lift a portion of a vehicle. Typically this is used to change a tire although other maintenance is sometimes performed with the use of a car jack.
It is a term used to describe a jack stored in a vehicle that is used to raise a vehicle and remove the tire/wheel.
There is a possibility (a danger) that a hydraulic Jack can suddenly slip, or develop a leak and collapse. Once the jack has raised the vehicle, it is put on to jack stands (axle stands) to prevent being trapped underneath the vehicle.

FIRST - Determine if you are jacking the vehicle correctly (is the jack is being applied at the correct location(s)? ) SECOND - Are you extending the jack to its full limits? THIRD - Determine if the vehicle is equipped with the proper jack (Your vehicle is 10 years old - is it possible that the original jack has been lost or replaced somewhere in its life?).
The jack points on a 1998 Corvette are along the vehicle's frame, just behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels. They provide a secure point to jack the vehicle up.

The best way to lift the front of a Vehicle to work on it is to use a trolley jack. With a trolley jack , make sure you use the jack stands just in case the jack slips. You wouldn't want to be crushed.
It's different from vehicle to vehicle. you'll have to check in the manual for safe jacking points.
