a 4 wheel drive vehicle has the options of engaging 2 or 4 wheel drive when you need 4 wheel drive.for example to get out of mud .

all wheel drive means that all wheels constantly have power to them.there are no options except tha they work all the time. all wheel drive is usually on highway cars not off road cars, and all wheel drive basically helps with traction and braking in inclement weather. so pretty much if ya are stuck in mud in all wheel drive, that's pretty much where you are going to stay until you are towed
