The mean value is the total amount of petrol currently held in all the cars in the entire world, divided by the total number of cars. Good luck with that calculation.

The median value would be almost impossible to calculate. The modal value, however, can probably be approximated. We must firstly assume the average amount of fuel in the tank to be just over half the average size of a fuel tank (since most people will refuel prior to the tank being completely empty and fill right to the top). Given that a common mid-sized saloon/hatchback fuel tank is around 60L (15gal), one might estimate that the modal amount of fuel in all cars is therefore approximately 35L.
